Winter Park Lodging
Every winter, thousands of visitors find their way to Winter
Park, Colorado for what is considered by many as some of the best
skiing in all of the country. Composed of three interconnected
peaks – Winter Park, Mary Jane and Vasquez Ridge –
the Winter Park Ski Resort brings a world-class atmosphere set
in the beautiful backdrop of the Rocky Mountains. Winter Park
lodging opportunities are widely regarded as quite favorable along
with the many amenities and activities that accompany patrons’
visits.
Nestled on the western slope of the Continental Divide, Winter
Park is a short 90-minute drive west of Denver’s downtown
district. First settled during the construction of the Moffat
Tunnel, workers took up residency considering the location’s
proximity to the tunnel as well as the location’s sheer
beauty. A local merchant, “Doc” Graves recognized
the amazing scenery, along with its potential as a getaway destination
and began development with 26 tourist cabins, a café and
service station in the early twenties. Known then as Hideaway
Park, much of the village’s economic prosperity was due
to Graves’ foresight to power the town by a water wheel,
which he installed at the nearby Vasquez Creek. Despite the looming
Great Depression, Winter Park continued on and began to flourish
as a charming mountain vacation getaway. In 1939, the Winter Park
Ski Resort opened its doors and has enjoyed numerous seasons of
winter activities ever since. Even though the town had experienced
years of successful skiing and thousands of vacationers, Winter
Park wasn’t officially incorporated until August 1, 1978.
Commonly known today as “Colorado’s Highest,”
Winter Park claims the highest elevation of any incorporated town
in the United States with an elevation of 12,060 feet above sea
level. Over the years, Winter Park slowly has evolved away from
being known as a winter attraction and has experienced visitors
year-round. Many simply flock to Winter Park to take in the beautiful
sites through miles of hiking trails through nature preserves
or on various mountain bike paths. Many take advantage of guided
horseback tours or even take their experience to new heights on
a hot air balloon ride.
No matter what the reason someone might find themselves in Winter
Park, Colorado, it’s certain that there is much to enjoy
in this serene mountain town. Winter Park lodging is more than
amicable and the hospitality brings back visitors year after year.
One thing is for certain, Winter Park brings a unique aura to
the already spectacular peaks of Colorado – it should truly
be enjoyed by all.
